Hair washing: What is the best frequency?

How often we should wash our hair is a common concern for many of us. How do we determine if we're washing our hair too often, or not often enough? What impact does this have on the health of our hair? In this article, we answer all these questions.

Factors that influence hair washing frequency

The ideal frequency of hair washing depends on several factors.

Hair type: Washing frequency varies between oily and dry hair. Oily hair requires regular washing, but not daily, unless you use a suitable shampoo, such as our purifying detox shampoo specially designed for oily and dandruff-prone hair. Indeed, there's a tendency to believe that oily hair needs to be washed every day. Well, no! Washing too frequently with harsh products can cause an overproduction of sebum, creating a vicious cycle.

Dry hair, on the other hand, requires regular washing with a gentle, nourishing shampoo, applied only to the roots. Just because it's dry doesn't mean it's not dirty! An accumulation of pollution, product residue, and sebum can build up at the roots and clog the hair follicles, making hair dull and even drier.

Physical activity: Intense and regular physical activity requires more frequent hair washing to remove sweat and excess sebum. Prolonged moisture on the scalp can cause skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis.

The environment: External factors such as pollution and climate also influence the cleanliness of our scalp. For example, in an urban environment or a hot and humid climate, more frequent hair washing may be necessary to control oil buildup.

The use of styling products: Gels, hairsprays, oils and other styling products require washing the hair after use to remove chemical residues and preserve scalp health.

General recommendations for hair washing frequency

Although there is no universal rule for how often to wash your hair, here are some general recommendations:

  • Normal hair can be washed every two to three days.
  • Dry hair can be washed once or twice a week.
  • Oily hair may require daily washing.
  • Textured or curly hair can be washed once a week.

Consequences of washing too frequently or not frequently enough

When you wash your hair too frequently, you risk stripping away the natural oils produced by your scalp, which can lead to dryness of both the skin and hair. This lack of natural oils can make hair more fragile and prone to breakage. Conversely, if you don't wash regularly, the sebum naturally produced by the scalp can accumulate, creating an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria and fungi. This buildup can lead to itching, irritation, and even dandruff. Therefore, finding a balance in washing frequency is essential for maintaining healthy, vibrant hair while preserving the scalp's natural balance.

Tips for a perfect hair wash

For optimal hair washing, be sure to choose a shampoo suited to your hair type and use a conditioner to maintain the hair fiber's moisture. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp while washing and rinse thoroughly. Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel to dry it, as this can damage it; instead, gently pat it with a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to remove excess water.
